French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said the demand for departure of the Syrian President Bashar Al Assad should not be a precondition for launching a political process in the country.
During Friday’s press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, the French foreign minister recalled that Paris had already assured that in order to launch the political process in Syria, no preconditions, including Al Assad's departure, should be set, noting that the French side does think Al Assad should be targeted by any political process.
It is noteworthy that a number of European politicians have already changed their narrative on Al Assad’s departure, with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying that Assad is stronger than her government wants, though it's important to realize he's not going anywhere.
The British Foreign Minister also assured his country no longer sees departure of Al Assad as a precondition for a political solution in Syria.
Even sources in the so-called “Syrian opposition” were quoted as saying that Saudi Arabia informed its foreign office that the President Al Assad was staying and that the issue of his departure could no longer be discussed.
