Russian President Vladimir Putin described Russia's role as key to the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria.

The head of state stressed that Russia is working closely with partners on the elimination of weapons of mass destruction in order to "save mankind from the threat of the use and spread of such an important lethal weapon."

"In this connection, I would like to recall the key role of our country in solving the problem of chemical weapons in Syria," Putin said.

In September 2013, a resolution of the UN Security Council was adopted on the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria. Then in 2014, in 19 stages, 1.2 thousand tons of chemicals were exported from Syria. The operation involved nine countries, including Russia.

Despite this, a number of Western countries continue to blame Syria for the use of chemical weapons. Damascus is continually accused of using chemical weapons without providing any evidence of the fact, or the supposition that such weapons can indeed be obtained by rebels from abroad.
