The head of the Russian delegation at the Syria peace talks in the Kazakh capital of Astana, Alexander Lavrentyev, told reporters, that it is still to early to discuss bringing in United Nations peacekeepers to the de-escalation zones in Syria.
"At the moment, we believe it is premature to grant international status to the observers," Alexander Lavrentyev said.
He did highlight however that if other states suggested to deploy military police units from in the de-escalation zones, "the guarantor states [Russia, Iran and Turkey] will consider them, as all decisions are taken on the consensus basis," Lavrentyev added.
Lavrentyev then emphasized that Iran has every right to participate in the Syria peace process.
"At the moment, there are some members of the global community who do not wish to see Iran take part in the process," he said. "So there is a need for everyone to recognize Iran’s right to take part in the Syrian settlement process, as well as in the country’s restoration, particularly, in the restoration of the destroyed infrastructure facilities," the Russian diplomat added
