Six farmers were shot dead on September 1 in the Peruvian Amazon over a lands right dispite, a police officer and indigenous leader revealed.
A group of masked men bounded the feet and hands of five people before disposing of their bodies in a river, with a sixth person found by the side of an unpaved road in the jungle region Ucayali, police officer Raul Huari said.
Robert Guimaraes, the head of an indigenous federation in Ucayali, explained that the victims were peasant farmers who refused to leave their lands they work on, despite being pressured to do so by oil palm growers.
Witnesses testified that a group of between 30 and 40 men carrying shotguns tried to kill some 20 farmers altogether, Huari said according to Reuters
"They said they showed up, surrounded them and just started shooting. Fortunately, some managed to escape," he said. "In my 24 years of working I've never seen anything like this."
