The United States has decided to freeze the sales of arms to Turkish Police Forces and Erdogan’s security guards.
The decision comes in the wake of May 16th violence when Erdogan’s security guards attacked people that were protesting in front of the Turkish embassy in Washington.
Two senators, Patrick Leahy and Chris van Hollen, said the decision was made after they submitted a bill to stop all arms shipments to Turkish security.
A $ 1.2 million deal, made between the New Hampshire-based Sig Sauer company and the Turkish security services, was also frozen.
“The arms deal, that is primarily focused on personal protection of Erdogan, should have never ever been approved, given the excessive use of force by Turkish security”, Leahy and Van Hollen said in a joint statement.
“We must stop selling arms to the Turkish National Police forces, as they are carrying out mass arrests and frequently exaggerate with the use of force against Turkish citizens who are quietly criticizing the government”, the statement added.
Previously, 19 members of Erdogan's security were prosecuted for the events which took place in front of the Turkish regime's embassy building in Washington. Several protesters had to be taken to hospital.
For his part, Erdogan said actions of the United States serve as a living proof of how the American judiciary works, claiming that the demonstrators were “terrorists.”
