An Assyrian-born lawmaker representing Assyrian and Chaldean Christians in the Iranian Parliament has accused the UN of closing its eyes on the crimes committed by terrorist group ISIS against the Assyrians in the Middle East.
While addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, Yonathan Betkolia slammed the human rights organisations and the UN for their silence over ISIS crimes against the Assyrians and said all these entities remained completely silent on the horrible crimes the Assyrian people had to go through.
He also touched developments in Iraq and Syria, the two countries which are considered as historical homes to the Assyrian population, noting that since the emergence of ISIS in both countries, the Assyrians have been greatly oppressed.
“The people have seen some of the deadliest strikes on their thousands-year-old identity and history and were forced to leave their homes”, Betkolia said, adding that all these things are/were happening as the UN and the human rights groups remain completely silent.
On October 4th, Betkolia went to Damascus where he discussed the situation of the Assyrians with the Syrian leadership.
