Commander of Hawija Operations, Lieutenant-General Abdul Amir Rasheed Yarallah, announced the start of a large-scale military operation, aimed at liberating Al Rashad district of Hawija in Kirkuk province of Iraq, located 250 km north of Baghdad. 

In his press statement, Yarallah said the Iraqi Army and the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) began their latest offensive to liberate the entire area of Al Rashad district, the surrounding villages including, from the grip of the terrorist group ISIS.

The operation is carried out within the framework of the second phase of the process of liberating Hawija.

The Iraqi Prime Minister and the Supreme Commander of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Haider Al Abadi, also confirmed the launch of the operation that comes within the second phase of process of liberating Hawija and its surrounding areas, located in the western part of Kirkuk. 

Since June 2014, Hawija district of Kirkuk province has been under control of the terrorist group ISIS, forcing tens of thousands of its residents to flee towards the city of Kirkuk.
