ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took part in an official ceremony commemorating the 79th anniversary of the death of the Republic of Turkey's founding father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, in Ankara on Friday.
Thousands took part in a procession which finished at the Kemal Ataturk Memorial.
Meanwhile in Istanbul, Turkey's largest country, Thousands of people took to the streets to commemorate Ataturk's death.
People carried a large Turkish flag with Ataturk’s portrait on it.
Sirens wailed throughout the city as citizens observed two minutes of silence.
Ataturk was the founding father of the Turkish Republic after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire following the chaos that gripped the Old World Order's Empire during and after World War One.
He led Turkey to become a modern republic inspired by European ideals following the backwardness of the Ottoman Empire that did not modernize.
