Syria has recognized Crimea as an inviolable part of Russia. This was stated by the Chairman of the Syrian Parliament, Hadia Abbas, in an exclusive interview with Sputnik.

“We recognize that Crimea is an inviolable part of Russia,” Hadia Abbas said, emphasizing that relations between Syria and Russia are strategic and promising, and that the Syrian Arab Republic’s authorities intend to work on developing them in all spheres - political, economic, social, and consular.

The chairman of Syria’s parliament noted that Crimea was a part of the Soviet Union and that “as a result of the events that developed following the collapse of the Soviet Union up to the present time, this subject has returned to its roots following the people's free expression of their will in the referendum in Crimea, which directly reflected the interests of the peninsula’s residents.”

Abbas added: “They decided to reunite with their country. That’s what happened!”
