One of Fort Russ's favorite French writers makes the news in a way that we very much like.

Ronald Zonca is a full-time resident in Simferopol, the capital of the Crimean Peninsula District, with its Parliament, local government, and so on. Married to a Russian, father of a 6-year-old child, from this Franco-Russian marriage, the former French soldier has definitively devoted himself to his new homeland that he intends to help develop. 

The Way of St. Vladimir is his pet child. It's a project to rival the Camino de Santiago de Compostela with its flow of pilgrims. The Orthodox are very pious and the pilgrimage is a form of leisure enjoyed by many Russian citizens.

It is well known that it was indeed in Chersonese, the ancient suburb of Sebastopol, a highly spiritual place, that Russia received her baptism through the intervention of the great Russian prince, St. Vladimir. 

So Ronald Zonca proposes to create a Way for pedestrian pilgrims with shelters throughout this journey of several hundred kilometers. The Crimea offers a fantastic panorama rather like Provençal but improved (without the marshes of the Camargue). 

Historical places are abundant and the whole is marked by the resurgence of faith, so apt for Russia in the "days of cathedrals" as post-Soviet modern times are often called. Upon his arrival, Mr. Zonca was struck by their confidence in their future. He also speaks of a sympathetic and hard-working people and not of a tribe of alcoholics attracted to imbibing on a daily basis.

There is also a personal note: Ronald knows that he has a great grandfather who died at the Battle of Alma in the Crimea in the nineteenth century.

For him, Russia is a magnificent country where there are some difficulties, as everywhere else, but whose atmosphere is a hundred leagues from the Ottoman-Socialist miasmas that plague the air in France.
