Moscow will not consider reducing nuclear weapons in exchange for the US lifting sanctions. This has been stated by the Russian president’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov.

US President-elect Donald Trump stated in an interview for Times that he intends to raise the question of significantly reducing nuclear arsenals in negotiations with Russia. Trump also spoke of the possibility of lifting sanctions in exchange for agreement on nuclear arms reduction.

“There are no negotiations being held on this matter now,” Peskov replied to journalists’ questions on whether Russia would consider reducing its nuclear arms. He remarked that this is not a question on Russia’s domestic agenda nor in its plans for communicating with foreign partners. Rather, the Kremlin representative stressed that Moscow “was not the initiator of these sanctions” and does not intend “to raise the question of these sanctions during foreign contacts.”

On the question of whether Moscow’s position will change towards nuclear arms reduction, Peskov emphasized that this topic will be discussed only after Trump is inaugurated president. “I would not discuss this initiative now at all. Only after Mr. Trump’s inauguration,” Peskov said.
