Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov has told journalists that Ukraine’s behavior in blocking the UN Security Council’s adoption of a statement on the death of Vitaly Churkin is not as important as the enormous loss that Russian diplomacy has suffered.

“The news is genuinely tragic. You know, President Putin yesterday expressed his condolences to the relatives and loved ones of Ambassador Churkin as well as the whole foreign ministry staff. This really is a big loss. Amidst this loss, the behavior of our Ukrainian colleagues - well, God will judge them for this, so there’s probably nothing to say. And this is not so important amidst the loss that Russian diplomacy has suffered,” Peskov said.

Vitaly Churkin, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, died yesterday in New York the day before his 65th birthday. Ukraine, as a member of the UN Security Council, decided not to issue a statement on his passing.
