Ukraine stands for the revision of the Budapest Memorandum, signed in 1994 which established the non-nuclear status of the country, said Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.

"Of course, we need US support in restarting negotiations between the parties who signed the Budapest Memorandum," - Klimkin said on Tuesday, speaking at a hearing in the US Senate.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the territory of Ukraine still had an arsenal of nuclear weapons. In 1994, the country refused the use and possession of nuclear weapons by joining the Budapest Treaty. In return Kiev was provided security guarantees from Russia, the US and the UK.

After 2014 the country has repeatedly stated their intention to recover the status of nuclear power in Ukraine.
