As part of the Astana process, Moscow will continue its efforts to implement the agreement on establishing de-escalation zones in the northwestern Syrian province of Idleb in order to secure its population from the threat of terrorism, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

At a press conference today, the Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova  said the situation in the province of Idleb is a source of concern due to increased activity of the terrorist group Hay’at Tahrir Al Sham (ex-Al Nusra Front), asserting that the latter exploits the calmed-down situation in other places in Syria in order to amass and deploy its forces.

She also expressed Moscow's condemnation of the killing of 7 White Helmets “activists” as a result of an armed attack last weekend.

“The Russian Foreign Ministry has declared, more than once, its principled position on the work of the White Helmets, and we have not changed it”, Zakharova said, while also stressing that from the humanitarian point of view it is unacceptable to kill unarmed people.

“Russian diplomacy noted that the improvement of the political situation in Syria and the implementation of necessary measures in the process of establishing de-escalation zones and deployment of Russian military police units in those areas, gives hope to greatly improve the humanitarian situation in the country, and build bridges of confidence in the Syrian society in common struggle against terrorism”, she added.

On the situation in Afghanistan, Zakharova said the country is still being ravaged by sectarian violence, pointing to the recent incident when foreign gunmen boarded helicopters of unknown origin (according to eyewitnesses), and later committed a massacre in the Shia Hazara village in Sar-e Pol Province, killing at least 50 civilians, several children including.

She urged the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan to thoroughly investigate the incident in order to discover to whom belonged the unidentified helicopters that appeared in the areas controlled by extremists.
