Spanish Police sources confirmed a man acting suspiciously has been shot dead in the town of Subirats, located 30km west of Barcelona, at around 5:05 pm local time.
The suspect, who was reportedly wearing an explosive belt, is believed to be Younes Abouyaaquoub, a 22-year-old Moroccan ISIS terrorist who, on Thursday afternoon, rammed his rented van into a busy crowd on Las Ramblas in center of Barcelona, though his exact identity is yet to be announced.
Over the past weekend, authorities admitted they had no idea where Younes Abouyaaquoubcould be, with some saying he could have left for France.
Abouyaaquoub is said to have left the van after his horrific deed and fled on floot.
“We don't have any specific information on this but it cannot be ruled out”, the Police chief Josep Lluis Trapero said at a press conference yesterday.
“If we knew that he was in Spain and where, we would go after him. We don't know where he is”, he added.
The horrific terror attack that devastated the Catalonian city of Barcelona on Thursday, has left at least 15 people dead and some 100 more injured after a Moroccan ISIS terrorist named Younes Abouyaaquoub drove his van into pedestrians on the most crowded street in the center of Barcelona.
A female neighbour in Subirats is believed to have called police this afternoon after spotting a man she thought was Abouyaaqoub, and who was acting suspiciously.
When she asked him what he was doing, he suddenly ran towards a nearby vineyard area, Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia claims.
Immediately afterwards, police units were dispatched to the scene and shot the man.
Although it is not yet known whether the man really was Younes Abouyaaquoub, it is confirmed that he was wearing an explosive belt.
