Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today Israel supports the establishment of an independent Kurdish state, in conjunction with an Arab and international rejection of the referendum on independence of Iraq’s Kurdistan region.
“Israel opposes the PKK and considers it a terrorist organization, unlike Turkey which is supporting Hamas, because Israel opposes terrorism in all its forms, however, at the same time, it also supports the legitimate efforts and demands of the Kurdish people to obtain their own state”, Netanyahu said in a statement issued by his PR office.
Netanyahu's speech, however, comes in opposition to the one delivered a few days ago by the former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, Yair Golan, at a conference in Washington, during which he expressed support for Kurdish independence, saying that the PKK, which is fighting against Turkey, is not a terrorist organization.
Senior Israeli officials have pointed out that Netanyahu's words reflect the declared and official Israeli policy as regards the issue of “Kurdistan”.
“The interest of Israel and the United States is the establishment of an independent Kurdish state in Iraq, and time has come for the United States to support these Kurdish efforts”, said the Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked while delivering her speech at the annual ICT's World Summit on Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya.
For September 24th, the ruling Barazani regime in Kurdistan region of Iraq is scheduling a referendum on region’s independence. The move is being opposed not only by Iraq and its neighbourng states, but several major world powers, Russia and the United States including, as well.
Yesterday, the Iraqi Parliament unanimously voted a big “NO” as regards the Kurdish independence from Iraq. Majority of the Kurdish MP have already threatened to withdraw their position out of protest.
