Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Moscow supports Saudi efforts to unite the factions of the so-called “Syrian opposition” in a unified delegation, saying that these efforts contribute to the progress of negotiations in Geneva and Astana.

“This step will create the conditions to move the political process on the basis of international resolution 2254”, Lavrov said during a joint press conference, held with his Saudi counterpart Adel Al Jubeir in Jeddah on Sunday, adding that Moscow and Riyadh both firmly support the establishment of de-escalation zones in Syria, especially out of humanitarian reasons.

Lavrov also reiterated his country's position that only the Syrians can decide the fate of their state.

The Russian Foreign Minister expressed his hope that an agreement on establishing a fourth de-escalation zone, this time in the northwestern Syrian province of Idleb, will be reached during the new session of meetings in Astana, which is expected to be held on Thursday and Friday.

Lavrov, who met Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz and several high+-ranking Saudi officials after arriving in Jeddah earlier today, will also sign a number of agreements and discuss many issues concerning developments in the region, a Russian diplomatic source said.

The same source also said that the foreign minister will travel to Jordan, in order to discuss the development of Jordanian-Russian relations, and of course the Syrian crisis.

On the Saudi king's visit to Moscow, the Russian diplomatic source said no official confirmation has been made by the Saudi side as of yet, although it is expected that it will be taking place somewhere in October.

For his part, the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al Jubeir talked about the ongoing diplomatic row with Qatar, saying that the latter must show seriousness in finding a solution to the crisis, act like a state that truly aims to fight terrorism and stop meddling into internal affairs of other states.

He stressed that Qatar must respond to the list of demands, presented by Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt.

Regarding the Syrian issue, Al Jubair said his country supports the idea of establishing de-escalation zones throughout Syria, and looks forward to the start of the political process.

He welcomed the position of Russia on the crisis in Yemen, saying that the positions of Riyadh and Moscow on regional issues are identical.
