Switzerland may soon outlaw the Burqa and other Islamic women's clothing that completely hide the face. A committee by the Swiss People’s Party was formed on this issue which gained more than 100,000 signatures and has been submitted to the Swiss Federal Council. After that, the government will be obliged to develop a bill on a nationwide ban and if it does not pass through the parliament, the question will be put to a national referendum.

The Swiss People's Party is known for its anti-Islamic and anti-immigrant sentiments. This is their second attempt to achieve a national ban on Islamic clothing. The first battle in parliament ended in defeat: in March 2017, the upper chamber had rejected the initiative, although earlier the lower chamber had supported it.

In one area of Switzerland, Ticino, there is already an official ban on wearing religious clothing that hides the face. The penalty for breaking the regulation is 10 thousand Swiss francs. As recent polls show, about 70% of the population of the whole country support the initiative, and as such the bill that will be put to parliament is expected to gain some traction. The entire process however can take up to two years.
