MOSCOW, Russia. The mandate of the UN peacekeepers mission to Donbass should be an 'occupation' of sorts, said Kurt Volker, the US Department special envoy to Ukraine. This was announced today at a meeting with representatives of European business in Moscow, by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"He said that it is necessary for peacekeepers to occupy the entire Donbass and encircle it - he used another word, but the meaning is the same. And only then the United States will support Poroshenko's actions to fulfill all his obligations, including amnesty, giving special status and holding elections.
It is absolutely clear to us that as soon as 'peacekeeping' forces occupy the entire Donbass, Poroshenko will not lift a finger to do anything," Lavrov said.
He also called Volker's statement about the non-admission of LPR representatives to negotiations inadequate.
"Volker said that this is the business of Europe, Ukraine and Russia. The Donbass cannot be allowed in any negotiations. If this is considered an adequate answer, I deeply regret that," Lavrov said.
