TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak , who plans to participate in the presidential election campaign in 2018, told the media that she can not be judged for her words about the Crimea. As Sobchak noted, the law in Russia prohibits calls for secession or violation of territorial integrity. But her opinion does not coincide with the state one, which is a normal state of affairs for the opposition.
At the first press conference after announcing the intention to run for the presidency, Sobchak said that she considers the Crimea to be Ukraine's territory, and the restoration of relations between Russia and Ukraine is the main task of the Russian Federation. This statement caused criticism and great resonance on the part of many politicians and the public.
Russian experts differed on whether Sobchak could face criminal liability for calling the Crimea a Ukrainian territory . Some believe that her statement is freedom of speech. Others note that there is already a judicial practice for such statements, so Sobchak can be held accountable legally, if there are inclinations of separatism, if justification is found in her words.
Earlier, Sobchak said that she plans to take part in the presidential elections in 2018. The TV presenter is positioning herself as a candidate "against all". The next election of the President of the Russian Federation will be held in March 2018. It is planned that the election campaign will start in December 2017.
The Crimea, as a reminder, became a Russian region after a referendum, which was held in March 2014. As a result, 96.77 percent of the voters of the Republic of Crimea supported the accession into the Russian Federation. Ukraine considers the Crimea its own territory, but temporarily occupied. Sobchak, former pop star turned political journalist, is long standing opposition to Vladimir Putin. Sobchak's father was a staunch democrat politician during the Yeltsin years and knew Mr. Putin personally. Putin has only spoken highly of him and Sobchak's beliefs in a democratic system of society. However, it has no connotation to the events in Crimea.
