The United States will withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), State Department announced today.
The withdrawal will come in effect on December 31st 2018.
“This decision was not taken lightly, and reflects US concerns with mounting arrears at UNESCO, the need for fundamental reform in the organisation, and continuing anti-Israel bias at Unesco”,the State Department said in a statement.
“Nevertheless, the United States will continue to work with the organization as a non-member observer state in order to contribute US opinions and expertise on issues like press freedoms and protecting world heritage”, the statement added.
For her part, Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova expressed her profound regret over decision of the United States to withdraw from the organization, saying that the American decision is a loss to the international community, the multilateralism, the United Nations, and the United States.
Back in 2011, the United States canceled its contribution to the budget of UNESCO in protest of decision of the organization to grant full membership to Palestine.
Meanwhile, the office of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to start making preparations for quitting UNESCO, similar to those of the United States.
Netanyahu himself gave a “warm welcome” to the decision of US.
