According to the Head of National Security department of Lithuania, Darius Jauniškis, the children's cartoon "Masha and the Bear" constitutes a threat to national security, as part of the Kremlin's "hybrid war against the free world" - writes German newspaper Neues Deutschland.
You thought that the story about a littler girl and a bear was just an entertaining cartoon? You would be wrong! Lithuanian officials consider that the series is more true to reality than it is fiction. The bear is not at all friendly, and does not defend the little girl - and why does Masha wear a red star on her hat? If you really think about it, a similar garment was worn by officials of the KGB.
The Russian President too is former KGB - coincidence? They don't think so. Of course, viewers in Mexico, where the cartoon is titled «Masha y el Oso» don't notice such detail . "It's just that they do not yet know what kind of danger this aggressor cartoon poses to their national security", writes the German journalist.
The situation is entirely different for the people of Baltic countries. This is why the President of Luthuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė, urges her officials not to treat this kind of Russian propaganda lightly. Experts warn of "coded political messages" that Masha propagates. These messages are subliminal and it would be best not to show the cartoon on television at all.
Ed: Masha and the Bear is a children's series that originates from Russia, with a number of stereotypically Russian gimmicks. None of it very subliminal in our opinion, but for the Baltics this kind of sentiment is a longstanding one.
