British Prime Minister Theresa May is since yesterday visiting Saudi Arabia, hoping to attract investors to the country that is now looking for new economic partnerships in preparation for the post-Brexit era.
May’s visit to Saudi Arabia has already drawn criticism in Britain and is particularly related to severe human rights abuses by the Saudi regime. It was later reported that the British delegation does not mind to address “difficult” issues during diplomatic visits. However, the priorities remain focused on economy.
May’s two-day trip to Saudi Arabia also includes a meeting with Mohammed bin Nayef, a crown prince of the Saudi Regime, with whom she already discussed "joint cooperation on combating extremism and fighting against terrorism, as well as sharing the views on developments in the region ." On Wednesday ,May was also greeted by Salman bin Abdul Aziz, the king of Saudi Arabia.
May’s visit to Saudi Arabia is a part of her three days Middle East tour that began on Monday when May visited Abdullah ll, the king of Jordan. The two leaders agreed to strengthen economic cooperation between the countries as well the ties between the British forces and the Jordanian army in their joint struggle against the terrorist group ISIS.
Prior to arriving in Riyadh, May’s office issued a statement, saying the government is looking to take advantage of "the huge potential of Saudi investments that could give a strong boost to the British economy."
Britain is looking forward to signing new trade agreements amid preparations to leave European Union, the complex process of separation that could last up to two years.
London is now focusing on finding reliable partners among its historic allies, namely the wealthy Gulf states, among whom Qatar has already promised to make 6.23 billion dollars of investments in Britain over the next five years.
May’s visit was strongly criticized by Jeremy Corbin, leader of the opposition Labour Party, due to severe human rights violations, done by the Saudi regime. He also urged the authorities in London to immediately halt all arms sales to Riyadh and push to impose a cease-fire agreement in Yemen, a country, where Saudi Arabian forces have, for the past two years, been conducting a military aggression.
Hundreds of civilians have died in the strikes, carried out by the alliance of Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s puppet president, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.
