The German Federal Office of Migration and Refugees (BAMF) reported receiving 444,000 asylum applications in the first half of this year, an increase of 32 percent when compared to the same period last year.
“The vast majority of these requests are the postponed ones from the past two years”, the Federal Office said in a statement, adding that it had not succeeded in keeping pace with the large number of applications, due to exceptionally huge influx of migrants to the country in that period, and which amounted to be at least one million people.
According to the statement, the number of migrants who entered the country in 2017 was “very stable”, with about 15,000 people entering every month, and a total of 107 thousand migrants by the end of July.
The Federal Office granted asylum to 20.9% of the applicants, while 17.1% were granted secondary protection, meaning that they were not given full protection or asylum, but rather a temporary protection, due to the risk to their lives in their country of origin not being that great.
6.3% of the applicants were not given the right to asylum or secondary protection, but received another type of protection which prevents deportation to their country of origin.
The Federal Office, however, rejected 38.9 per cent of all asylum applications, while 16.8 per cent of the remaining applications were the ones that were already withdrawn by the applicants themselves or canceled by the Federal Office because asylum applicants had applied for an asylum in other EU countries at the same time.
