CYBER CRIME
Cyber virus attacks companies in Russia
German Business News Published: 25.10.17.
Hundreds of companies in Russia and Ukraine are apparently affected by a malware program.
Russian companies also need more cyber protection as Bad Rabbit attacks.

An extortion program called "Bad Rabbit" is currently pushing its way, especially into Russia and Ukraine, but it also plainly has German targets in mind, as the IT security firm Kaspersky reported Wednesday.

Besides the Ukrainian airport of Odessa, and Russian media portals such as Interfax, around 200 other destinations are affected in the two countries as well as in other European states. Bad Rabbit came into notice Tuesday, reports AFP.

The software infects computers and blocks data and access for users, who are then prompted to make cash payments in order to regain access.

Most of the hacker targets were in Russia, but similar attacks were also "observed in other countries - Ukraine, Turkey, and Germany," the security company said. According to Kaspersky, the information system at Odessa Airport was affected, but the flights were on schedule.

The German Federal Office for Security in Information Technology (BSI), however, expressed its reservations. "BSI is currently unable to confirm a concern in Germany," a spokesman said on request from the AFP news agency. Also, the spread of the current attacks is not comparable to previous, large attack waves such as "WannaCry" or "NotPetya."

Nevertheless, the BSI recommended a number of precautionary measures. The spokesman pointed out that the attack is due to a fake update for the Flash Player. However, the active confirmation by the user with administrator rights is always required for its installation. The agency also renewed general security tips, such as the use of protection programs and the use of sufficiently complex passwords.

Wednesday the Russian news agency Interfax reported on persistent problems, among other things, no Internet. The independent Russian news portal Fontanka from St. Petersburg was also affected.

"With all respect for large media groups, they are not a critical infrastructure," said Nikolai Nikiforov, the telecommunications minister. The Department of Cybercrime at the Ukrainian police also stated that it was not a "targeted attack." The US Department of Homeland Security issued a warning about "BadRabbit" and called on users not to respond to the money requests, even if the return of data is not secured.
