Ex-President of Georgia and former governor of Ukraine’s Odessa region, Mikhail Saakashvili, stated in an interview to LIGA.net that he hopes to go down in history as one of the “founding fathers of the new Ukraine.”
“For me it would be a great honor if I will be one of them,” Saakashvili said. He remarked that he is looking for people capable of “creating a new country, like Jefferson, Washington, or Hamilton once founded the USA.”
Saakashvili put such a task before his recently registered political party “Movement of New Forces.” The current Kiev authorities, Saakashivili said, have missed their chance to change the country.
“Unlike Yanukovych’s government, Poroshenko and Yatsenyuk know that they can do better, but are deliberately not doing so,” he added.
President Petro Porsohenko has, in Saaksahvili’s words, “even stopped promising anything” and is “busy with blatantly asserting control over the media and corruption flows.”
In November 2016, Mikhail Saakasvhili left the post of governor of Odessa after blaming Ukrainian authorities for not wanting to fight corruption. In late February 2017, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine registered his new Movement of New Forces party which, according to him, aims to create a new political class and turn Ukraine into a “superpower.”
Saakashvili left Georgia back in November 2013 when several criminal cases, including charges of embezzlement, were launched against him.
