Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey has closed its border and airspace to the Iraqi autonomous province of Kurdistan after provincial authorities began declaring secession from Iraq, following the independence referendum which was reportedly won by 93% of the voters.
The move was expected as previously Turkey, along with Iran and Syria, stated such measures will be unavoidable should the Kurdistan Regional Government stage a referendum in support of Kurdistan’s independence from Iraq and begin with their process of separation.
Turkey, which is said to be a home of about 12 million Kurds, now fears developments in Iraqi Kurdistan might encourage domestic Kurdish separatist groups to increase their violent activities.
Only yesterday, four Turkish soldiers were killed after members of the outlawed Kurdish separatist group PKK planted a bomb in the town of Yuksekova, located in the southeast of the country.
Meanwhile, Gorran Movement, Iraqi Kurdistan’s largest opposition party, pointed to over $1 Billion of oil sales in September unaccounted for in the KRG’s provincial budget.
The Kurdistan's opposition party has released these sales figures for first time.
It is noteworthy that the Kurdistan region of Iraq is struggling with the high level of corruption among the governing ranks.
